intro on Polystyrene

I know is a bit boring.....bt i still think its important to post it out.......

What is polystyrene

Polystyrene is a petroleum-based plastic made from the styrene monomer. Most people know it under the name Styrofoam, which is actually the trade name of a polystyrene foam product used for housing insulation. Polystyrene is a light-weight material, about 95% air, with very good insulation properties and is used in all types of products from cups that keep your beverages hot or cold to packaging material that keep your computers safe during shipping. Polystyrene is a thermoplastic substance, normally existing in solid state at room temperature, but melting if heated (for molding or extrusion), and becoming solid again when cooling off.

History
---discovered in 1839 by Eduard Simon, an apothecary in Berlin,from storax,
---1845 chemically identical as Styroloxyd
---1866 Marcelin Berthelot correctly identified the formation of metastyrol from styrol as a polymerization, process.
---thesis of German organic chemist Hermann Staudinger (1881–1965,leading to the substance receiving its present name, polystyrene.
---In 1959, the Koppers Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, developed expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam. Edward J. Stove made the first commercial foam cup. Experimental cups were first made of puffed rice glued together to form a cup to show how it would feel and look.The chemistry was then developed to make the cups commercial.

Use of polystyrene
Solid polystyrene is used to make disposable cutlery, yogurt and cottage cheese containers, cups, clear salad bar containers and video and audiocassette housings.
Schools, hospitals, nursing homes, supermarkets, restaurants and sports stadiums are among the many institutions and businesses that rely on polystyrene packaging.
Grocery stores use polystyrene in virtually all meat and poultry trays. In addition, polystyrene packaging can be found in egg cartons and a variety of produce packages, such as apple trays, mushroom tills, tomato containers, and strawberry and grape crates.
Polystyrene food service products are generally more economical to use than disposable paperboard products and reusable food service items.
The wholesale price of polystyrene disposable food service products is often approximately two to three times less than an equivalent disposable paper container, and four to five times less than a comparable reusable food service item when the costs of equipment, labour, water, electricity, and detergent costs are included.

Harm n beneficial
---Polystyrene does not biodegrade and resist to photolysis. It crumbles into fragments that do not break down
---its light and is often abundant in the outdoor environment
---The majority of polystyrene products are not recycled because of a lack of suitable recycling facilities. polystyrene "recycling" is not a closed loop, producing more polystyrene; polystyrene cups and other packaging materials are instead usually used as fillers in other plastics, or in other items that cannot themselves be recycled and are thrown away.Food service polystyrene packaging is not recycled because it is not economically viable due to contamination.
---Polystyrene takes up more space in landfills than paper and eventually will re-enter the environment when landfills are breached by water or mechanical forces.
---Polystyrene is not currently collected though kerbside recycling (some country manage to collect and recycle the polystyrene, but it just limited to some types of polystyrene.
---polystyrene deplete the ozone layer.
Initially a portion of polystyrene production was aided by the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), the chemicals that break down ozone in the troposphere. When this issue came to light, polystyrene manufacturers negotiated a gradual phase-out of CFCs in the production process and no CFCs have been used since the late 1980's.
Though polystyrene manufacturers claim that their products are "ozone-friendly" or free of CFCs, this is only partially true. Some polystyrene is now manufactured with HCFC-22, which, though less destructive than its chemical cousins, CFC-11 and CFC-12, is still a greenhouse gas and harmful to the ozone layer. In fact, according to a 1992 study by the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, HCFCs are three to five times more destructive to the ozone layer than previously believed.

---unpolymerized styrene may pose health risks. Nevertheless, the EPA(environment ppolicy of America) states:

“ Styrene is primarily used in the production of polystyrene plastics and resins. Acute (short-term) exposure to styrene in humans results in mucous membrane and eye irritation, and gastrointestinal effects. Chronic (long-term) exposure to styrene in humans results in effects on the central nervous system (CNS), such as headache, fatigue, weakness, and depression, CSN dysfunction, hearing loss, and peripheral neuropathy. Human studies are inconclusive on the reproductive and developmental effects of styrene; several studies did not report an increase in developmental effects in women who worked in the plastics industry, while an increased frequency of spontaneous abortions and decreased frequency of births were reported in another study. Several epidemiologic studies suggest there may be an association between styrene exposure and an increased risk of leukemia and lymphoma. However, the evidence is inconclusive due to confounding factors. EPA has not given a formal carcinogen classification to styrene. ”

开始咯~~

1。开着灯睡觉

从小到大我一直都有开着灯睡觉,虽然知道有点不好,但就是喜欢开着灯睡啊,我不怕黑,只是自我醒觉意识高jie~~~

2。百分百夜猫家族

每天没有到一点是不睡觉的(但早上就很迟醒,有时忘记起来去上课,就叫别人帮忙签名咯~~~<儿童不宜模仿>

3。环保一族

再循环,拒绝这,拒绝哪,都少不了我的份;有人说我偏激,可是我就是酱子的阿。。。

4。爱胡思乱想

是也想,不是也想,总之就是乱乱想就对啦。。。

5。喜欢涂鸦

每次一有那死人闷到爆的meeting时,我就会哪纸张进去乱画,乱写,画什么,写什么,不跟你们讲。。。。

6。不唱(少唱)K

每次如过去唱K,我就是大大大大大输家。。。。

7。不追星

每次朋友讲她的偶像是谁啦,怎样啦,我就是冷冷的答:哦,是酱啊??然后。。。。

记得有一次,有人问我你的偶像是谁,我就答他:my idol is…………………… myself。当场喷血。。。

8。喜欢吃,但是就是吃不肥

之前,人家看到我每天吃吃吃,但是为什么还是那么瘦?这我那知啊?可能新陈代谢快了些。但就是给我老爸说浪费米,吃酱多,又不见得长肉,亏本投掷。。。。

9。坐不静

就是很奇怪,我这个人就是不能坐静静的,就是要起来啦,要不就很多小动作。。。

10。喜欢的东西就会买下它

一看到喜欢的东西,多数为书,书画用具。曾经花上500大元就为了买一刀的超上等宣(现在那纸在家发霉ing)。。。

好了,完成了,现在是颁奖时刻,我要颁给。。。。。。

USM has banned polystrene,how about other university????

USM has banned polystrene,how about other university????
whyban polystyrene containers ... ?
-styrene is “possibly carcinogenic for humans”(IARC)
-Other researchers/authors claim that styrene is a confirmed carcinogen
-benzene is a known carcinogen,a products are made with petroleum, a non-sustainable, heavily polluting and disappearing commodity.
-high environmental impact
-500 years to breakdown (but into what ...?)
-high energy consumption, greenhouse effect & total environmental effect (second highest after aluminium)
-starvation of birds and marine animals
-low in weight but very high in volume (takes lots of space in landfill)
-low recyclability (but why do we want to recycle hazardous products?)
-Toxic chemicals leach out of these products into the food that they contain. These chemicals threate human health and reproductive systems.
-takes up more space in landfills than does paper and eventually will re-enter the environment when landfills are breached by water or mechanical forces.


USM has banned it for environment, how about other university?how abouut urselves?From TODAY,

Can I Borrow $25?
A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.
SON: 'Daddy, may I ask you a question?'
DAD: 'Yeah sure, what it is?' replied the man.
SON: 'Daddy, how much do you make an hour?'
DAD: 'That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?' the man said angrily.
SON: 'I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?'
DAD: 'If you must know, I make $50 an hour.'
SON: 'Oh,' the little boy replied, with his head down.
SON: 'Daddy, may I please borrow $25?'
The father was furious, 'If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don't work hard everyday for such childish frivolities.'
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.
The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?
After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down , and started to think:
Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $25.00 and he really didn't ask for money very often The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.
'Are you asleep, son?' He asked.
'No daddy, I'm awake,' replied the boy.
'I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier' said the man. 'It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the $25 you asked for.'
The little boy sat straight up, smiling. 'Oh, thank you daddy!' he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills.
The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again.
The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.
'Why do you want more money if you already have some?' the father grumbled.
'Because I didn't have enough, but now I do,' the little boy replied.
'Daddy, I have $50 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.'
The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness.
It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share that $50 worth of your time with someone you love.
If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of hours. But the family & friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.
